Nine Pound Hammer

Buck Norris sings Nine Pound Hammer by Merle Travis. Merle Robert Travis was born on November 29, 1917, in Rosewood, KY. His father was a coalminer, and the family lived on the bare edge of poverty; eventually this experience, coupled with a phrase that Travis' father used to describe their lives, became the basis for the song Sixteen Tons. His very first instrument was a five-string banjo, but when he was 12 year old his older brother gave him a homemade guitar. Travis was lucky enough to have as neighbors Ike Everly, later the father of Don and Phil, and Mose Rager, who played in a unique three-finger guitar style that had developed in that area of Kentucky. Travis learned this approach as a teenager and grew astonishingly proficient in a repertory that included blues, ragtime, and popular tunes. It wasn't enough to earn a living, and he survived by working in the Civilian Conservation Corps as a teenager. His first break came during a visit to his brother's home in Evansville, IN, in 1935, where his chance to entertain at a local dance resulted in membership in a couple of local bands and a chance to appear on a local radio station. By 1937, he was a member of Clayton McMichen's Georgia Wildcats, and a year later he'd moved on to the Drifting Pioneers, who found a permanent broadcasting gig at Cincinnati's WLW. The Boone Country Jamboree radio show kept the group busy until World War II came along and forced it to disband. While a member of the Drifting Pioneers, Travis acquired a national following, and also began playing with Grandpa Jones and the Delmore Brothers in a gospel quartet called the Brown's Ferry Four. He later teamed up with Jones as the Shepherd Brothers as the first artists to record for the newly founded King Records label in 1943. He and Jones even exchanged songs and found the sources for a few songs together -- it was while out with Jones one day at a black church in Cincinnati that Travis heard the sermon that became the song That's All. Travis spent a short stint in the Marines, but was quickly discharged and returned to Cincinnati. During the late winter of 1944, he headed for Los Angeles, where he began making appearances in Charles Starrett's Western movies and playing with Ray Whitley's Western swing band. With guidance from Tex Ritter and bassist Cliffie Stone, in 1946 he released the topical song No Vacancy -- dealing with the displacement of returning veterans -- along with Cincinnati Lou, and earned a double-sided hit. His next major project was a concept album, Folk Songs of the Hills, which was intended to compete with Burl Ives' successful folk recordings. The record, released as a set of four 78-rpm discs, was a failure at the time it was released in 1947 (it wasn't even transferred to long-playing disc until nearly ten years later). However, it yielded several classics, among them the Travis originals Sixteen Tons, Dark as a Dungeon, and Over by Number Nine, as well as introducing such standards as Nine Pound Hammer; it also became a unique document, depicting a beautiful all-acoustic solo guitar performance by this master virtuoso. The initial failure of the folk album aside, 1947 began a boom period in Travis' career. In addition to writing the million-selling hit Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! for his friend Tex Williams, he had a half-dozen Top Ten records himself, including Divorce Me C.O.D., So Round, So Firm, So Fully Packed, and Three Times Seven. Travis also devised the first solid-body electric guitar, coming up with a model which, when perfected by Leo Fender, would become a key element in early rock & roll. The string of hits didn't last, but Travis' career continued uninterrupted, with performances on stage, television, and record. Beginning in 1953, he landed a fairly visible movie role in one of the biggest films of the year, From Here to Eternity, where he performed Re-Enlistment Blues, and it was around that same time that he began playing on all of his friend Hank Thompson's records. In 1955, Tennessee Ernie Ford had his crossover hit with Sixteen Tons, and it was around that same time that Travis acolytes such as Atkins were making a major impact on music themselves. Scotty Moore, who'd first been influenced by Travis from his radio performances, had become Elvis Presley's lead guitarist, and a year after Elvis hit nationally, the Everly Brothers (themselves Atkins disciples) started topping the charts.

A Perfect Separation of the Living from the Dead EffectThe performer is seated at a table opposite two volunteers. The performer places a small article in front of each person, such as an old coin and an old fountain pen (these are to act as 'markers'). The performer now takes out from his wallet, a small packet of old photographs which he quickly thumbs through as he mentions to the volunteers that they may recognize some of these as they have appeared in books or programs about the Titanic as they were all passengers on that ill fated liner. The packet is squared and turning to the first volunteer, the performer says that he is going to show him/her the photographs one at a time and if they feel somehow drawn to some, they should tell him and they will be placed in front of them and their 'marker'. The performer shows the photographs, one by one to the volunteers, who either decides to take one and place it on the pile forming in front of them or reject it. The rejected photographs forming a discard pile in the center of the table. 'Look at this young lady please, what emotions do you think she is feeling.....' When all the photographs have been chosen to be kept or rejected, the performer brings attention to the discard pile. Thumbing through the photographs the performer starts talking about specific photos (the person's name etc) stressing how absolutely any of the photos could have been retained by the volunteers. The performer explains that what they have both just done was part of an experiment. He also explains that he has found that the best results only occur when nothing is explained beforehand and that the results are always different (quite true to a point). The performer then states that the old coin was taken from one of the bodies found in the wreckage of the Titanic and the fountain pen was used by a clerk to write out the list of all the survivors. The person with the coin is asked to turn their photographs over and in doing so they see each photograph has printed on its back, the name of the person, a few details about them and that they DIED! The spectator holding the fountain pen turns their photographs over and sees the similar details but all their photographs have SURVIVED printed on them! The discarded pile is turned over and shown that there is a complete mix, in no sequence of both the DIED and SURVIVED photographs! After the initial amazement, the spectators may ask how this was possible to which the performer replies, As I said, it was an experiment. The fact is I can't explain it! It seems to be just another mystery surrounding the Titanic. At this point, the performer can sit back and relax as the volunteers spend the next half hour or so looking at all the photographs and reading the details on the backs. Onlookers too will want to read the backs and quite often a chat session about the Titanic takes place. If you only want to perform one effect in an evening, this is it. If you want to finish an evening on a high note, this is it. Britains flagship broadcaster heard testimonies during the first unrestricted visit to South Ossetia by a foreign news organisation since the conflict ended. Photographs taken by Russian journalists in the first days of the conflict tell a disturbing story. But it is only now - more than two months later - that the world is looking at these pictures and reflecting on their meaning. For many, they paint a picture of indiscriminate force used against unarmed civilians. It's a side of the story international broadcasters have been accused of ignoring.A report by the BBCs Newsnight programme suggests Georgias armed forces committed war crimes during their attack in August. The BBC says the evidence proving this comes from the first unrestricted visit to South Ossetia by their correspondent.Taisiya Sitnik, or Taya, as the BBC reporter calls her, had spent many hours under the rubble of her apartment block in Tskhinval, with no food or water, in a dress covered with the blood of her dead son. She had already shared her tragic story once with an RT correspondent, three days into the conflict. More than two months later the BBC is finally telling her story.Richard Sakwa, a professor of politics and international relations at the University of Kent in the UK, said hed been inundated with messages complaining about how the Western media were covering the war. Im a great believer in popular common sense - the amount of emails I received and other messages - because people know Im involved in these questions - was astonishing! And the overwhelming message was disgust at the initial coverage by the BBC (it later did an excellent job) and in particular also CNN and other major western media. And this shift in Western attitudes seems to have improved relations between Russia and the UK, which have been at their lowest for decades. I think there has been a shift in the British governments position on Russia in the last month or so. One of the essential contributions of this piece is the work with spatialization. During its ten minutes of duration, the piece generates a constant interaction and dialogue amongst the different groups, and a co-existence between textures and gestures. The sound material, unified by a single stimulation and filterI will use the term filter to express the effect that can be compared with the one made by a lens, like blur and deconstructionis presented in different ways, but it can always be recognized. Although the musical characteristics and timbre possibilities are diverse, a single filtering process can be identified. This special feature, which strengthens in the listener the sensation of sound translation and transformation, adds a new dimension to the piece. The musical discourse is introduced and developed progressively through the processes of translation and transformation. The A section ends with a moment of great density and tension that results in an important climatic section. After this, a brass choral takes us to the B section that plays for a minute and a half with a series of individual guidelines for each instrumental group. Each group has its own game rulesexplained in the first page of the scoreand respond to the same stimulus of the conductor in an independent way. In the C section, the dialogue becomes more personal. An intimate climate is created between the two soloists. El discourse leaves the initial hustle and bustle, and becomes more relaxed, leading finally to its extinction.
